About

The Travancore Batasio (Batasio travancoria) is a compact catfish from the hill streams and river lowlands of Kerala, tucked into the biodiverse Western Ghats of southwestern India. It's one of only two Batasio species native to this corner of the subcontinent, and you can tell it apart from its close relative by the dark midlateral stripe running along its flanks and a somewhat smudgy spot just behind the gill cover. Features its near neighbor B. sharavtiensis completely lacks. The body is laterally compressed, typical of the genus, and the head carries large sensory pores that hint at its life moving through fast-moving water. Despite the aggressive and territorial tags this species sometimes carries, it is not especially combative in practice. The main thing to avoid is housing it with larger, pushy fish that will outcompete it. A group kept with similarly sized, peaceful schooling fish works well, and smaller hillstream catfishes or balitorid loaches make naturalistic and compatible tankmates. Breeding has been pulled off in captivity, apparently triggered by substantial cool water changes once the fish are in good condition, with eggs scattered freely and hatching within a couple of days. It's a manageable choice even for less experienced keepers willing to match its water flow and quality needs.
