Carplet
Amblypharyngodon mola
Also known as: Mola carplet, Mola Carplet, Pale carplet
A sleek South Asian cyprinid from rice paddies and slow canals, surprisingly adaptable in captivity.

About
Found across the shallow, slow-moving waters of South Asia, Amblypharyngodon mola is a cyprinid native to a broad range stretching from Pakistan and India through Bangladesh and Myanmar, with records reaching as far as Afghanistan. In the wild it turns up in an impressive variety of habitats. Ponds, irrigation canals, seasonal wetlands, low-flow streams, and even flooded paddy fields, which gives you a sense of how adaptable this fish can be when conditions shift. It is a slender, modestly sized fish that grows to a respectable 6 to 8 inches at maturity, so it needs a tank with genuine swimming room rather than a cramped setup. Being an omnivore, it will take a wide range of foods without much fuss, which helps in captivity. Reproductively it is a fractional spawner, meaning eggs develop and are released in batches over time rather than all at once. An interesting trait if you ever want to attempt breeding. Care is rated intermediate, so this is not necessarily a beginner's first choice, but an experienced keeper who appreciates understated South Asian fish will find it a rewarding and manageable species. Plan on a longer commitment, as these fish can live up to eight years with good husbandry.
