The Green Panchax (Aplocheilus blockii) is a small killifish native to India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, where it occupies the calmer fringes of rivers, coastal wetlands, rice paddies, and mangrove swamps. It is a surface fish through and through, spending most of its time just beneath the waterline, often motionless or drifting slowly beneath floating vegetation. In the wild it preys on insects, mosquito larvae, and small fry, and it has actually been put to work for mosquito control in parts of its native range. Unlike many killifish, it is not a seasonal species, meaning it does not follow the dramatic spawn-and-die cycle associated with annual killis. That makes it a more straightforward fish to keep for someone just getting into the group. Unlike some of its relatives, the Green Panchax tolerates a fairly broad range of water conditions and adapts reasonably well to life in a community setup, though small, slow tankmates near the surface may get nipped or eaten. Breeding is uncomplicated: pairs scatter eggs into fine plants, moss, or spawning mops, and the eggs hatch within a couple of weeks. Fry are tiny at first and need appropriately small live foods to get started, but raising them is manageable even for a newer keeper.
