Found only in the Sita-Swarna River system in Karnataka's Western Ghats, Barilius ardens is a sleek, active cyprinid with a distinctive color pattern: a row of bluish-green blotches running along each flank, the upper series vertically elongated and sometimes split into two smaller rows in larger adults. The dorsal and anal fins carry broad orange margins, making this a genuinely attractive fish when seen in a well-lit tank. For years it was misidentified in the trade as the related B. canarensis, so check your source carefully if you're hunting for it. Despite being listed as beginner-suitable, this isn't a fish for a typical community setup. It's a relentless swimmer and an assertive feeder that will easily outcompete slower or more timid tankmates, and genuinely small fish risk being eaten. The ideal setup pairs it with similarly active, robust species, think larger danios, other Barilius, or Dawkinsia, and bottom-dwellers like Garra or Botia that stay out of its way in open water. Keep a group of at least five; smaller groups often result in the weaker fish being harassed persistently. This is a shoaling species that forms a pecking order, so numbers matter. Breeding in captivity hasn't been documented.
