The diamond killifish (Adinia xenica) is a small, chunky North American native with a distinctive trapezoidal body shape, noticeably deep relative to its length, and large scales that give it a bold, almost geometric outline compared to most killifish. In the wild it occupies a surprisingly wide range of habitats along the northern Gulf Coast, from the southern tip of Florida across to Texas, turning up in freshwater creeks, brackish marshes, mangrove edges, and even hypersaline flats, almost always in very shallow water. That tolerance for extreme salinity swings is one of its most remarkable traits, and replicating the harder, more alkaline end of that chemistry is key to keeping it well. Despite its small adult size, the diamond killifish is not really a community fish. Its specific water requirements make mixing it with typical soft-water species a poor idea, and it does best in a species-only setup with a couple of females per male. It is not a seasonal killifish, meaning it does not require a dry dormancy period, and spawning in a well-arranged tank is manageable for a patient keeper. Eggs are laid continuously through warmer months and must be checked daily since adults will readily consume both eggs and fry. The species is uncommon in the hobby, but worth seeking out for anyone interested in native North American fish.
