The variable platyfish (Xiphophorus variatus) is one of the most color-diverse livebearers in the freshwater hobby, with commercially bred forms spanning virtually every hue imaginable. Some of them produced through crosses with swordtails or southern platies. The wild type, native to slow-moving canals, weedy ditches, and warm springs along Mexico's Gulf coastal plain from southern Tamaulipas down to northern Veracruz, is a slimmer, more elongated fish than its cousin X. maculatus, with a noticeably longer dorsal fin that breeders have pushed even further in high-fin strains. In the wild these fish are true omnivores, picking at insects, small crustaceans, worms, and plant material. In an aquarium they're peaceful, active, and genuinely forgiving. A solid choice for newer keepers. The main management consideration is the male-to-female ratio: males can pester females relentlessly, so keeping two or three females per male is strongly recommended, along with patches of dense planting to give females some breathing room. Broods can exceed 100 fry, and adults generally leave the young alone. One honest caveat. Many commercially produced platies carry the effects of heavy inbreeding and can be surprisingly fragile, so sourcing from reputable breeders matters more with this species than many people expect.
