The two spot astyanax (Astyanax bimaculatus) is a fairly large, active characin from South America, ranging from Panama down through the Amazon basin. In the wild it turns up in a wide variety of habitats, clear, fast-moving rivers, small streams, drainage ditches, and even artificial impoundments, which speaks to its adaptability. Its diet is equally broad, covering zooplankton, plant material, detritus, and occasionally the scales of other fish, so an omnivore mix works well in captivity. The common name comes from two distinct body spots, one near the tail base and one behind the gill cover. It is a vigorous, high-energy schooling fish, and while it is not particularly aggressive, its adult size and boisterous nature make it a poor match for slower-moving or smaller tankmates. Think of it as an alternative to the more familiar disc-shaped characins in the Metynnis and Myleus groups. It occupies a similar niche and demands similar space. Breeding is achievable at home with some preparation: fine-leaved plants as spawning substrate, a higher ratio of males to females, and good conditioning on live foods. Fry develop quickly and respond well to newly hatched brine shrimp. You will not find this species on most shop lists, and when it does appear it is usually an accidental arrival mixed in with other shipments.
