Lined Sole
Achirus lineatus
Also known as: Lined-sole
A master of disguise that buries itself until almost invisible.

About
The lined sole (Achirus lineatus) is a flatfish that spends most of its life pressed against the substrate, so well camouflaged that only its eyes give it away. Found throughout a wide stretch of the Western Atlantic, from Florida and the northern Gulf of Mexico all the way down to northern Argentina, it naturally inhabits brackish and high-salinity lagoons, sandy-muddy estuaries, and shallow coastal zones. Like all flatfish, both eyes sit on one side of a flattened body, and the lined sole uses this body plan to shuffle into soft substrate and vanish. The faint parallel lines running across its body help break up its outline against sand and mud. In the aquarium this means a deep, fine-grained substrate is not optional. It is the whole point. A 55-gallon or larger setup with calm, alkaline, brackish water suits it well. Diet is straightforward: worms, small crustaceans, and meaty protein generally keep it happy. Juveniles go through a brief free-swimming phase before settling to the bottom for life, and they grow slowly from there. Despite its unusual body plan, this is actually a manageable species for a keeper who understands its brackish requirements and gives it the right substrate to feel at home.
