The sailfin molly (Poecilia latipinna) is one of the most recognizable livebearers in the hobby, largely thanks to the adult male's dramatically enlarged dorsal fin that fans out like a sail when he displays. Native to coastal waterways from North Carolina down through the Gulf states and into Mexico, this species thrives in shallow, often brackish environments. Tidal ditches, vegetated backwaters, slow-moving streams, and coastal marshes. That tolerance for hard, alkaline water, including a degree of salinity, carries over well into aquarium life, making this a reasonable choice for newer keepers provided the water isn't soft or acidic. In the wild, sailfins graze heavily on algae but will take small invertebrates and insects opportunistically, and they're just as unfussy in a tank. Temperament is worth watching. Males can be quite pushy with each other, especially when competing for females, and larger individuals may hassle smaller tankmates. Keeping a higher ratio of females to males helps reduce harassment. Breeding is straightforward, with females producing decent-sized fry after a roughly two-month gestation. Worth noting: the trade offers many color varieties and a balloon-bodied form, but the balloon morph carries real health risks due to its deliberately malformed body shape. The wild-type fish, rarely seen in shops, shows variable natural patterning and is honestly worth seeking out.
