The Firemouth Cichlid (Thorichthys meeki) is one of those Central American cichlids that earns its name the moment it feels cornered. It flares its gill covers outward to flash that vivid red-orange throat patch, making itself look considerably more dangerous than it usually is. That blaze of color runs across the underside of the head and is most intense in mature adults, complemented by iridescent blue-green spots on the head and flanks and a series of vertical bars along the body with a distinctive dark blotch at the midside. In the wild, this fish inhabits slow-moving rivers, canals, and rocky ponds across southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize, favoring mud or sand substrates and the cover of shoreline vegetation. Despite its dramatic threat display, it is genuinely one of the more manageable cichlids in the hobby. Not especially aggressive outside of spawning periods, and quite sociable when kept in groups of eight or more. Breeding pairs are protective parents and not particularly difficult to spawn with consistent care and a varied diet. Virtually every Firemouth in the trade today is commercially raised, making wild-caught specimens a rarity. Poeciliids and swordtails make good tankmates, and similarly sized Central American cichlids can work too, provided there is enough territory to go around.
