The knife livebearer (Alfaro cultratus) gets its name from something genuinely unusual: a row of modified paired scales that form a sharp keel along the underside, running from the anal fin to the tail. It's a small but distinctive fish, and once you know what to look for, nothing else really looks quite like it. In the wild, this species is native to Costa Rica, Panama, and Nicaragua, where it turns up in rainforest streams, roadside ditches, and along the margins of larger rivers. Usually in shallow water and often in loose groups near the surface. It's an insect-eater by nature, with juveniles picking off aquatic insects and adults showing a preference for terrestrial prey that falls onto the water. In the aquarium, it's adaptable and genuinely hardy, which makes it a realistic choice for intermediate keepers who want something a little different. That said, it can be quarrelsome, particularly toward its own kind, so tankmates should be chosen carefully. Robust fish of a comparable size tend to work best, and a species-only setup is always a solid option. Breeding happens readily when conditions suit them, with broods ranging from a few dozen to nearly a hundred fry. You won't often spot this one at a chain store, but it circulates fairly regularly through hobbyist networks and specialist breeders.
