The butterfly splitfin (Ameca splendens) is a fascinating livebearer from the Rio Ameca basin in Jalisco, Mexico, and one of the few freshwater fish that nourishes its developing young through a specialized internal structure called a trophotaenia. Functioning much like a mammalian placenta. Newborns sometimes arrive with a small remnant of this tissue still attached, which disappears within a few days. It is a goodeid, a family of livebearers with some notable differences from the more familiar guppies and mollies: females do not store sperm, so each brood requires a separate fertilization event, and there is no visible gravid spot to indicate pregnancy. Males develop a clear dominance hierarchy among themselves, with the top fish showing the brightest colors and most assertive behavior. That competitiveness carries over to feeding time and general tankmate interactions, making this a species that needs careful thought about tank companions. Robust, similarly sized fish can work, but a dedicated species setup tends to bring out the best in a group. Breeding is straightforward once conditions are right, with females producing relatively small broods of impressively large fry that are immediately bold and ready to compete for food. Though the wild population is considered vulnerable, captive populations are well established, and selectively bred color variants exist.
