The T-bar cichlid (Amatitlania sajica) is a personable little Central American fish native to the Pacific-draining rivers of Costa Rica, where it occupies moderate to swift-flowing streams over gravel and smaller rocks rather than true rapids. In the aquarium it carries that same bold cichlid personality you'd expect from a much larger fish, making it an interesting choice for hobbyists who want the cichlid experience without dedicating a huge tank to it. The common name comes from the distinctive T-shaped bar pattern on the body, which helps distinguish it from similar small cichlids in the Amatitlania group. Semi-aggressive under normal circumstances, this species becomes a genuinely formidable defender once breeding begins. Particularly the female, who will go after anything she perceives as a threat to her eggs or fry. Like many cave-spawning cichlids, pairs prefer to deposit their eggs on vertical or angled surfaces inside sheltered spots, and the fry have a fascinating early-life behavior of grazing nutrients from the parents' skin. Because of that breeding aggression and the general cichlid temperament, tankmate selection deserves some thought. Give them a well-filtered setup with some current, rocky hiding spots, and a varied omnivore diet, and they are a rewarding fish for someone ready to move beyond beginner-level species.
