Found in the Usumacinta river basin straddling Mexico and Guatemala, Amphilophus nourissati is a mid-sized Central American cichlid with the kind of personality that fills a tank. The Usumacinta drainage is one of the great river systems of Mesoamerica, and the cichlids that come out of it tend to be robust, territorial, and opinionated. This species is no exception. Adults develop the classic chunky build you see across the Amphilophus group, and like many of its relatives it puts on considerable color and attitude as it matures. Expect strong pair bonding during spawning, and the kind of parental defense behavior that can make tankmates genuinely nervous. This is not a community fish in the typical sense. Thoughtful tank planning matters here: plenty of space, sturdy decor, and companions that can hold their own without escalating into constant warfare. Because it shares its river system with other Usumacinta cichlids, species-appropriate tankmates from the same region can work well when the aquarium is large enough. Reaching somewhere between five and nine inches depending on conditions and sex, this is an intermediate-level fish that rewards keepers who appreciate cichlid behavior and are willing to give it the room and attention it deserves.
