Pike killifish (Belonesox belizanus) are one of the more unusual livebearers you'll encounter in the hobby. Elongated, torpedo-shaped fish with a pointed snout that makes their ambush-predator lifestyle immediately obvious. Native to slow-moving, heavily vegetated canals, coastal lagoons, and marshes from Mexico through Central America, these fish are remarkably adaptable in the wild, tolerating brackish conditions and water with little dissolved oxygen. That toughness carries over into captivity and makes them relatively forgiving to keep, provided you understand what you're working with. The key thing to know upfront is that these are dedicated piscivores. They cruise the upper water column looking for prey, and anything small enough to fit in that pike-like mouth will be eaten. Including smaller tankmates and their own fry. A 65-gallon minimum is not just about swimming room; females can reach nearly eight inches and are noticeably larger than males. Pairs or species-only setups are the most practical approach. Dense surface planting helps keep them calm and gives any pursued fish a chance to escape briefly. Like other livebearers they reproduce readily, but raising fry alongside adults requires careful planning. A fascinating fish for someone who wants something with genuine predatory personality in a freshwater setup.
