The sailfin molly (Poecilia velifera) is the larger, more spectacular cousin of the more commonly kept mollies, native to the coastal lagoons, estuaries, and brackish flats of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and surrounding regions. The males are the main attraction here. When kept in good conditions, they develop a truly remarkable dorsal fin that can span nearly the full length of the back, fanning out like a sail when the fish is displaying. Females are noticeably plainer and larger-bodied. Numerous selectively bred color forms exist in the hobby, including black, albino, and red variants, some of which originated through crosses with the closely related sailfin molly P. latipinna. One form worth avoiding is the so-called balloon variety, which carries a deliberately malformed, rounded body. This deformity is associated with swimbladder and digestive complications. As a species, velifera demands hard, alkaline water as a non-negotiable, and will actually thrive in brackish setups alongside gobies or chromides. It can even adapt to full marine conditions over time. Breeding is manageable but a step up from other livebearers. Males pursue females relentlessly, so keeping two females per male is wise. Fry are reasonably large at birth and easy to feed, though separating the mother before she gives birth gives the young the best chance of survival.
