The dwarf panchax (Aplocheilus parvus) is a small killifish from India and Sri Lanka, where it inhabits heavily vegetated streams, rivulets, and sheltered brackish backwaters. It spends most of its time near the surface, which makes sense given its upturned mouth and its reputation as an effective natural predator of mosquito larvae. In the wild this feeding role makes it genuinely useful, and it has been used in some regions for biological pest control. Despite being labeled a beginner species, there are credible reports that it can be tricky to keep long-term in aquarium conditions, so some extra attention to water quality and a varied diet of small live or frozen invertebrates is worthwhile. It is also worth knowing that this species is frequently misidentified as the blue panchax or the green panchax, so if you're sourcing fish, double-check what you're actually buying. On the positive side, breeding is pretty straightforward. A spawning mop, fine plants, or a clump of moss will do the job, eggs hatch within a couple of weeks, and the fry grow on infusoria before moving up to baby brine shrimp and similar foods. A small, dedicated species tank with surface cover and floating plants suits it well.
