The blackfin coral goby (Paragobiodon lacunicolus) is a miniature saltwater fish with one of the most specialized lifestyles in the reef world. Across its wide range, from the Seychelles and Chagos Islands east to the Line and Tuamotu Islands, and from the Ryukyu and Bonin Islands south to Lord Howe Island, this species is found living almost exclusively among the branching architecture of Pocillopora damicornis coral, sometimes at depths reaching around 20 meters. It doesn't just visit this coral; it makes it home in the truest sense, rarely if ever venturing beyond the colony it has claimed. That extreme habitat specialization is what defines this fish and also what makes it genuinely challenging to keep. In a home aquarium, you'll need a healthy, established Pocillopora colony to give this goby anywhere to feel secure, which means it's realistically only suited to well-maintained reef systems run by experienced keepers. The fish itself is small even by goby standards, and the care level reflects the husbandry demands around its coral dependency rather than aggression or water sensitivity. If you can meet its very specific needs, it's a fascinating and unusual resident that few hobbyists ever attempt to keep successfully.
