The Cardinal Goby (Kelloggella cardinalis) is one of those fish that makes you do a double-take when you learn what it can do. In the wild, this tiny goby lives in the intertidal zone across a broad sweep of the Pacific. From the Ryukyu Islands down to the Great Barrier Reef and out to island groups like Fiji, Tonga, and the Marshall Islands. It spends its days actively moving between rock pools and open air, and it can breathe atmospheric oxygen when stranded out of water during low tide. That's not something you can say about most aquarium fish. Its tolerance for shifting temperatures and salinity in the wild speaks to a tough, adaptable constitution. In the aquarium it grazes on algae and will also take meaty foods like small crustaceans, so feeding it is rarely a challenge. At under an inch and a half fully grown, this is a genuinely nano-sized fish, though it still benefits from a setup that gives it rockwork to explore and claim as territory. Its care level is well within reach for newer saltwater keepers, and its unusual biology makes it a genuine conversation piece in any tidepool-themed or species-focused setup.
