The Blackspot Pygmy Wrasse (Wetmorella nigropinnata) is a small but charismatic fish that spends most of its wild life tucked into caves, crevices, and overhangs across the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea all the way out to the Marquesan and Pitcairn islands. It's a genuinely shy animal in nature, hugging the reef structure and picking off small benthic invertebrates rather than venturing out into open water. That secretive streak follows it straight into the aquarium, and new keepers are sometimes alarmed when their fish seems to vanish for days at a time. Plenty of rockwork with actual hiding spots, not just decorative caves, but real bolt-holes the fish can retreat into, goes a long way toward helping this species settle in and eventually feel confident enough to come out regularly. The species carries bold yellow banding and distinctive fin markings that make it easy to identify when you do catch a good look at it. At under three inches fully grown, it doesn't need a large footprint, but its intermediate care rating reflects its need for a well-established, stable reef environment and a steady supply of meaty foods. Reef-safe and generally peaceful, it works well with other small, non-aggressive tankmates.
