The bullseye puffer (Sphoeroides annulatus) is a hefty fish from the eastern Pacific, ranging from the California coast all the way down to Peru and out to the Galapagos Islands. In the wild, adults tend to favor soft, sandy or muddy seafloor habitats, while juveniles spend their early lives in estuaries. A reminder that this species is accustomed to variable coastal conditions. One of the more unusual things about this fish is that it can produce a loud, grating sound, which tends to surprise keepers the first time they hear it. Like other puffers, it relies on a beak-like dental structure to crunch through hard-shelled prey, so a varied carnivore diet that helps wear down those teeth is important for long-term health. Bullseye puffers grow into genuinely large fish, and they need a spacious setup to match. This isn't a species you can squeeze into a modest tank and expect to thrive. That said, they're considered a manageable choice even for less experienced saltwater keepers, provided the tank size commitment is met upfront. With good care they can live well over a decade, making them a real long-term companion rather than a passing project.
