The channeled applesnail (Pomacea canaliculata) is one of the largest freshwater snails you'll encounter in the hobby, and it makes an immediate impression with its rounded, glossy shell that can range from olive-brown to a bright golden-yellow depending on the individual. Native to South American river systems, particularly across Brazil and neighboring regions, it has also been introduced to many parts of North America and other continents, where it's become notorious as an agricultural pest in rice-growing areas. That reputation tells you something important about keeping this snail: it eats plant material with real enthusiasm. Soft-leaved aquatic plants are essentially a salad bar to channeled applesnails, so planted tank keepers need to think carefully before adding one. Tanks with hardy, tough-leaved plants or no live plants at all are a much better fit. They do well with other peaceful fish that won't nip at their antennae or body, and they're active enough to be genuinely interesting to watch, grazing across surfaces and glass throughout the day. Care is rated intermediate mostly because of the dietary considerations and their tendency to climb out of tanks. A secure lid is non-negotiable. Given the right setup, they're engaging, long-lived invertebrates.
