The cherry barb (Puntius titteya) is one of those rare fish that manages to be both widely available and genuinely rewarding to keep. Males develop a rich, deep red coloration across the entire body, especially vivid when kept alongside rival males in a proper group, while females show a more subdued silvery-pink with a horizontal dark stripe. In the wild, this species is native to the shaded, slow-moving streams and rivulets of Sri Lanka's Kelani and Nilwala river basins, where it picks through leaf litter and silt for algae, small invertebrates, and organic debris. Wild populations face pressure from collection for the trade, though the vast majority of fish available today are commercially farmed, including selectively bred albino and intensified-red strains. In the aquarium, cherry barbs are a genuinely peaceful community fish despite the semi-aggressive label. What you'll occasionally see is males chasing each other or nudging slower tankmates, nothing serious. They mix well with tetras, livebearers, small catfish, loaches, and similar community staples. Keeping them in groups of at least six to ten is the key to getting the best from them: it reduces skittishness, encourages natural schooling behavior, and brings out the best color in the males. A forgiving, adaptable species that's a solid choice for anyone new to the hobby.
