Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Green' is one of those plants that makes you look like a better aquarist than you might actually be. Native to Sri Lanka, it produces rosettes of soft green leaves that can stay compact and low or stretch upward into a mid-ground accent depending on how much light and space it gets. In a shaded spot under a dense canopy of larger plants, the leaves tend to spread outward and lie almost flat, while more open placement encourages a tidier, upright rosette. The coloration is a clean, natural green without much variation, which actually makes it a reliable contrast plant alongside red or bronze-toned species. What sets wendtii apart from a lot of aquarium plants is its tolerance for hard water, something many stem plants and mosses dislike. It is also genuinely unfussy about light, doing well even in conditions that would leave other plants struggling. Like most crypts, it may drop its older leaves shortly after being moved or replanted, a common reaction called crypt melt, but it rebounds quickly once it settles in. Root tabs will speed things along, but this plant does not demand them. It is a confident first crypt for beginners and a reliable workhorse for anyone building a natural-looking layout.

Care guide

Plant in substrate or attach to hardscape; it anchors via roots rather than rhizome. Tolerates low light well and actually stays more compact in shade. Bright light may cause it to stretch tall. Provide root tabs to encourage vigor, though optional. Expect some leaf drop after replanting (crypt melt); this is normal and temporary. Hard water tolerance makes it ideal for challenging water chemistry. Thin out older outer leaves occasionally to maintain shape. Space rosettes 8–15 cm apart to prevent crowding. Fertilizer helps but the plant survives without it in established tanks.

Breeding

Propagate by dividing rooted rosettes when the plant produces multiple offshoots or side crowns. Carefully separate young plantlets from the parent once they develop their own roots, then replant into substrate. This slow-growing crypt propagates steadily in established tanks but rarely produces runners or adventitious plantlets like faster-growing stem plants. Patience required; division typically yields one or two new plants per mature specimen annually.
