The ocellated labyrinth fish (Ctenopoma muriei) is one of the smallest members of its genus and, honestly, one of the more underappreciated African oddballs available to hobbyists. It ranges across a broad swath of east-central Africa, turning up in the White Nile basin, the drainage systems of Lakes Victoria, Edward, George, Albert, and Tanganyika. Often in swampy, low-oxygen environments like papyrus beds and seasonal pools. Like all anabantoids, it carries a labyrinth organ that lets it gulp air directly from the surface, which is a practical adaptation for water that most fish would find uninhabitable. In the wild it hunts insect larvae, small crustaceans, beetles, and mollusks, and it brings that same predatory mindset into the aquarium. Anything small enough to swallow is fair game. That said, it works well in a thoughtfully assembled African community alongside robust tetras, African butterfly fish, Pelvicachromis cichlids, and upside-down catfish, as long as tankmates aren't bite-sized. Males can be territorial with each other, so providing plenty of cover and visual breaks is important if you want to keep a group. Captive breeding is rarely documented, but the species is thought to scatter eggs like other Ctenopoma, with no parental care following spawning. Its small adult size and manageable temperament make it a rewarding project for an intermediate keeper willing to track one down.
