The fingered dragonet (Dactylopus dactylopus) is one of those fish that makes you do a double-take the first time you see it move. Rather than swimming in the conventional sense, it uses heavily modified pelvic fins, almost like stubby legs, to walk and prop itself along the seafloor. It's a genuinely unusual locomotion to watch, and it's the defining characteristic that sets this species apart from most other fish you'll keep. Found across a wide stretch of the Western Pacific, from Japan down to Australia and out to island groups like Guam and Palau, it inhabits sheltered sand flats, muddy slopes, and even estuaries across a broad depth range. In the wild it tends to be solitary or occasionally found in pairs, and that calm, unhurried personality carries over into captivity. It's a peaceful fish that won't bother tankmates, though its shy nature means it can be easily outcompeted for food. Feeding on small invertebrates, it needs a diet suited to a sand-dwelling carnivore. One behavior worth noting: it buries itself in the sand at night, so a suitable sandy substrate isn't just decorative. It's essential for the fish's wellbeing. Despite looking exotic, it's considered a workable choice for dedicated beginners with the right setup.
