The Blackstripe Cardinalfish (Apogon nigrofasciatus) is a small but bold fish with a wide natural range stretching from the Red Sea and East Africa all the way across the Indo-Pacific to the Tuamotu Islands, north to southern Japan, and south to New Caledonia. That broad distribution hints at an adaptable animal, though in the wild it tends to favor reef flats and shallow lagoon reefs, tucking itself under ledges or into crevices during daylight hours. Solitary or found in pairs, it spends the day largely out of sight and becomes active at night, picking off small bottom-dwelling invertebrates in the dark. For aquarium keeping, this nocturnal lifestyle is worth keeping in mind. It won't be out and visible the way a midwater schooling fish would be, but given appropriate cave structure and overhangs it will settle in and show more of its natural behavior. The temperament rating of aggressive puts it a step above typical cardinalfish, so tankmate selection matters more here than with gentler relatives. It's best suited to a reef or fish-only setup where it won't be crowded or bullied, and where its nighttime hunting instincts can be catered to with meaty foods.
