The Coral Perch (Serranocirrhitus latus) is one of those species that quietly surprises you once you know what to look for. Spread across a broad sweep of the Western Pacific, from the Moluccas east to Fiji, north to Taiwan and the Izu Islands, and south through New Caledonia and the Great Barrier Reef, with recent records from Tonga, it lives a life hugging the shadowy undersides of caves, ledges, and drop-offs along inshore coral reefs. One of its most distinctive traits is its habit of swimming inverted beneath overhangs, which looks odd until you realize it's just working the ceiling the same way other fish work the floor. In the wild it's usually found alone or in small, loosely organized groups. The body is deep and laterally compressed with warm peachy-pink and yellow tones, giving it a profile quite different from the more elongated anthias you might be used to. In the aquarium it tends to stay secretive and appreciates a tank with plenty of rockwork, caves, and vertical relief to replicate that drop-off environment. It's generally considered an intermediate-level fish. Not brutally demanding, but not the most forgiving choice for a brand-new reef keeper either. A peaceful disposition makes it compatible with most community reef setups.
