About

The scarlet dario (Dario dario) is a miniature badid from northern India, native to clear, vegetation-rich streams in the Brahmaputra drainage where aquatic plants like Vallisneria and Hygrophila crowd sandy, gravel-bottomed shallows. Males are immediately recognizable by seven iridescent blue vertical bars running along bright reddish flanks. A combination that makes this one of the more visually rewarding nano fish you can keep. Females are notably plainer and more subdued in color. Despite their small size, males are assertive toward each other and need room to carve out individual territories. In tighter quarters, a single pair works best; in more spacious setups, a group can coexist if caves and sight-breaks are spread out rather than clustered together. The species is gentle toward dissimilar fish but can be easily bullied or outcompeted at feeding time, so rowdy or larger tankmates are a poor match. Being a carnivore that often hesitates at dry foods, it does best when offered live or frozen invertebrates regularly. Breeding follows a substrate-spawning pattern where the male guards eggs scattered on the underside of leaves and takes on all parental duties after spawning. The fry are tiny and need infusoria-grade food early on, so raising them successfully takes some planning. A rewarding species for the keeper who takes the time to set up the tank around its needs.
