Found over coarse sandy shallows throughout Lake Tanganyika, Ectodus descampsii is one of the more uncommon cichlids to make it into the hobby, and hobbyists who do track it down will want to do their homework before setting up a tank. Despite being classified as aggressive, this species is actually quite timid by cichlid standards, and the "aggressive" label likely reflects intraspecific dynamics within a group rather than outward boldness. Boisterous tankmates like Mbuna are a poor fit and will cause this fish to become withdrawn. Better companions include Julidochromis, Neolamprologus, Cyprichromis, and Tanganyikan Synodontis catfish. Keeping a group of at least eight is strongly recommended, as individuals housed in smaller numbers tend to lose confidence and hide. In the wild it grazes on diatoms, algae, and microorganisms, so a diet that covers both plant matter and small protein sources suits it well in captivity. Breeding has not been documented in aquaria, though it is a polygamous maternal mouthbrooder in the wild, with males digging spawning pits in the substrate. Worth noting: a second, undescribed fish is sometimes sold under the same name, informally called Ectodus sp. "north". It stays smaller and carries its dorsal spot further forward than the true species, so the two can be told apart with a careful look.
