The flame angelfish (Centropyge loricula) is one of the most recognizable dwarf angels in the saltwater hobby, and for good reason. Its vivid orange-red body, crossed with vertical black bars and edged with deep blue and purple on the dorsal and anal fins, makes it immediately identifiable in any reef store. In the wild, it inhabits clear lagoon and seaward reefs across the tropical Pacific, typically hovering close to coral and rockwork for cover rather than venturing far into open water. That secretive, shelter-hugging nature carries straight over into the aquarium, so a tank with plenty of live rock and hiding spots is genuinely important for keeping this fish comfortable. Socially, flame angels are generally calm with unrelated species, but they can be assertive toward newcomers, other dwarf angels, or fish with a similar color pattern. In the wild they live in harems, so keeping more than one is risky unless you have a large system and introduce them carefully. This is a species that rewards intermediate keepers who can give it a well-established tank with stable conditions and a varied diet that includes quality prepared foods alongside algae-based offerings. With good care, it can thrive for years.
