Banded Angelfish

The banded angelfish (Apolemichthys arcuatus) is one of the more distinctive angelfishes in the hobby, wearing a crisp white body divided by a broad black band that sweeps across the midsection like a bandit's mask. Hence one of its popular alternative names. It's essentially a Hawaiian endemic, found around the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll, where it haunts rocky reef ledges, cave overhangs, and deeper coral zones. Researchers have recorded it at depths well beyond 100 meters, which likely explains why it prefers cooler water than most marine fish you'll encounter at a typical fish store. In the wild its diet leans heavily on sponges, supplemented by algae, hydroids, and opportunistic snacking on eggs. In captivity, getting it to accept prepared foods can take some patience, but once settled it tends to be a reasonably forgiving fish. Relatively unusual for an angelfish. The cooler temperature range is the real consideration here: this isn't a fish you can drop into a standard tropical reef setup without planning ahead. Given enough space to establish territory and suitably cool, stable water, the banded angelfish rewards attentive keepers with a calm, personable presence that stands out in any large display.
