The golden dwarf barb (Pethia gelius) is one of the smallest members of its genus, and that small size is really the key to understanding how to keep it well. Native to rivers and slow-moving or still waters across Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, where it forages over silty, muddy substrates for insects and small crustaceans, it has become widely kept by hobbyists looking for a gentle, active nano species. The body is pale yellow, with the dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins carrying a brighter yellow tone, and three diffuse dark blotches run along the flank, giving it a subtle but tidy pattern. Despite being described as beginner-friendly, it does need some thoughtful tankmate selection: its timid nature means it can easily be outcompeted or stressed by larger, more boisterous fish. It does best alongside other small species. Tiny rasboras, miniature danios, small loaches, or freshwater shrimp. This is a schooling fish at heart, and keeping a group of at least eight to ten really transforms how it behaves. Males will spar gently with each other for female attention, the group moves with more confidence, and the natural flocking behavior is genuinely satisfying to watch. A well-planted tank suits it nicely, and spawning can occur in a mature setup without much intervention.
