Burton's Cichlid

Found in the shallows and slow-moving waters around Lake Tanganyika and its tributary rivers, Haplochromis burtoni is a cichlid that packs a lot of personality into a mid-sized frame. Males develop vivid coloration, typically a mosaic of orange, yellow, and blue with distinct egg-spot markings on the anal fin, while females tend toward a more subdued, brownish appearance. In the wild this species gravitates toward river mouths, sluggish streams, and the calm nearshore zones where rivers feed into the lake, habitats that are often warmer and more turbid than the open lake itself. In the aquarium, burtoni behaves as you would expect from an African rift cichlid: males are assertive, territorial, and will not back down from a confrontation with other males or similarly sized tankmates. Keeping multiple males together without enough space and visual breaks in the aquascape is a recipe for serious conflict. A species-focused setup or a mixed Tanganyikan community with robust, similarly tempered fish tends to work best. This is not a fish for beginners, but intermediate keepers who enjoy the behavioral complexity of rift lake cichlids will find burtoni an endlessly interesting resident. Lifespan with good care runs into the latter half of the decade.
