Pangusia Labeo (Labeo pangusia) is a substantial riverine fish native to the major river systems of South and Southeast Asia, with a range spanning Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and extending into Afghanistan, Bhutan, and Myanmar. In the wild it favors the fast-moving upper reaches of large rivers and streams, where strong currents and well-oxygenated water define its natural habitat. It also turns up in lakes and ponds, suggesting a degree of adaptability to slower water as well. As an adult, this is a genuinely large fish. Specimens can push past two feet, and that size alone makes it a serious commitment for any keeper. A tank of considerable volume is simply non-negotiable. Diet-wise, it grazes heavily on algae and diatoms, which makes it a capable and functional addition to large systems with persistent algae growth, though like most omnivores it will accept a broader range of foods in captivity. Across much of its native range it is valued as a food fish, which tells you something about its hardiness and its capacity to grow on relatively modest fare. This is intermediate-level keeping mostly because of scale. The space requirements and the need to replicate decent water movement put it beyond a typical starter setup.
