The common pleco (Hypostomus plecostomus) is probably the fish most hobbyists encounter long before they know anything about fishkeeping. Sold as a helpful algae cleaner, often without any mention of how large it actually gets. In the wild, this species comes from the coastal river systems of the Guianas in northeastern South America, where it lives in slow-moving, tidal-influenced stretches of river with muddy bottoms and patches of swamp. It's well adapted to low-oxygen conditions, capable of breathing air when the water quality drops. Diet in the wild leans heavily on algae and biofilm, with occasional small crustaceans rounding things out. In the aquarium, it earns its keep by rasping algae from glass and hardscape, though it does most of its work after the lights go out. Give it plenty of hiding spots, bogwood, rocky caves, dense planting around the edges, and it'll settle in well. The catch is that adults regularly push 12 to 15 inches, which means a tank large enough to house one properly is a genuine commitment. This is not a fish to buy on impulse for a community setup. For keepers who plan ahead and have the space, it's a hardy and long-lived addition that can thrive for well over a decade.
