Found threading through submerged wood and leaf litter in the Amazon river basin of Brazil, Auchenipterichthys longimanus is a driftwood catfish with a quietly impressive personality once you get to know it. It belongs to the family Auchenipteridae, a group sometimes called the driftwood or thorny catfishes, and shares their characteristic streamlined body, flattened underside, and long, sensitive barbels. Coloration tends toward muted browns and grays with subtle patterning. Not flashy, but there is a certain elegance to the way these fish carry themselves. In the aquarium, this is a largely nocturnal species that spends daylight hours tucked into caves, hollow logs, or any shaded refuge it can find. Come evening, it becomes noticeably more active and will forage across the tank with purpose. It is generally peaceful toward tankmates too large to swallow, though it will make short work of very small fish or invertebrates. A well-decorated tank with plenty of hiding spots is essential. Without them, this fish stays hidden around the clock and you will barely know it exists. Given its moderate size and intermediate care requirements, it suits keepers who already have some experience managing South American biotope-style setups. With proper conditions it can live well over a decade.
