Manduba, Slopehead Catfish

The manduba (Ageneiosus inermis), also known as the slopehead catfish, is a large auchenipterid from South America with a range that spans much of the continent, from Venezuela and Colombia down through the Amazon basin and into the river systems of Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. In the wild it gravitates toward slower, heavily vegetated backwaters rather than open river channels, and it is most active after dark. It is a dedicated predator, feeding primarily on fish and crustaceans, and it grows large enough that tankmates in an aquarium context are essentially limited to similarly-sized catfish or robust pelagic characins like Colossoma or Piaractus. A combination that realistically only works in a public aquarium setting. The species is visually distinguished from its closest relative, A. marmoratus, by a plain, unpatterned body and a noticeably larger adult size, and it shares the family trait of a truncate rather than forked tail. What really sets this catfish apart is its reproductive biology: fertilization is internal, with males developing modified barbels and a copulatory organ during breeding season that are used to court and physically secure females. Breeding has never been documented in home aquaria. This is unambiguously a species for advanced keepers with exceptional space, and even then it is more of a public-aquarium fish than a home one.
