The slobbering catfish (Brachyplatystoma platynemum) earns its odd name honestly. Those broad, flat maxillary barbels are thick enough to give the fish a perpetual drooling appearance, which is unusual even among the large South American pimelodids. Found across the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, this species appears to make seasonal migrations tied to flooding cycles, though the finer details of its wild behavior and diet remain largely a mystery to science. In terms of looks, adults are smoothly countershaded from a medium grey or brown back fading gradually toward a lighter belly, with no spots or stripes to speak of. The caudal fin is deeply forked with narrow, equal lobes, and unlike some of its close relatives, this species retains those characteristic fin filaments into adulthood. It can reach well over three feet in length, which means housing one seriously requires a very large dedicated setup. This is not a fish for casual large-tank keepers. Only tankmates big enough to avoid being swallowed should be considered. Breeding has never been documented in captivity, and given the scale of the fish and the gaps in our knowledge of its biology, this one is really a species for dedicated large-catfish enthusiasts with the space and commitment to match.
