Found throughout the Amazon River basin in South America, this large loricariid catfish, Acanthicus hystrix, is one of those species that looks perfectly manageable as a juvenile but tells a very different story by the time it reaches adulthood. Young fish are relatively peaceful and carry a dark, plain coloration that sets them apart from their spotted relative, Acanthicus adonis. As they grow, and they will grow, potentially reaching two feet in length, their temperament shifts considerably. Adults become intensely territorial and aggressive, particularly toward other bottom-dwellers, and should realistically be housed alone in that regard. The best tankmates, if any, are large open-water fish like arowanas or peacock bass that simply don't compete for the same space. This is a species that requires genuinely massive quarters, and the honest reality is that most specimens sold in the trade probably never reach their potential because their keepers run out of space first. On top of the size concern, the entire body is heavily armored with sharp spines, so handling requires serious caution. A standard aquarium net can become a real problem. An albino form exists and turns up occasionally in the trade. Despite being listed as beginner-level in terms of water chemistry tolerance, the space and aggression demands make this a fish for very experienced keepers with genuinely large setups.
