Found in the Cuiabá River basin of Brazil, part of the upper Paraguay River drainage, this small loricariid, Ancistrus claro, is one of over 60 valid species in a remarkably diverse genus that ranges from Panama all the way down to Argentina. Like other members of Ancistrus, it sports the group's trademark fleshy tentacles on the snout rather than the bony plates and odontodes you'd find on the nose of many other loricariids, and it also carries well-developed interopercular spines. Identifying this particular species takes a bit of attention: males show small spots on the head combined with worm-like, vermiform markings on the body, while females carry small spots across both head and body. The relatively long maxillary barbels, which are free from the lower lip, help separate it from closely related look-alikes. It's an air-breather, either facultatively or obligately, so surface access matters. Behavior-wise, it's active during the day and generally peaceable in a community setting, though it does show some territorial tendencies toward its own kind and similarly shaped bottom-dwellers. A well-structured aquarium with caves and line-of-sight breaks helps keep the peace. It's a cave-spawner, with males handling brood duty, and in a mature, well-maintained setup, you may find juveniles appearing on their own without any deliberate intervention on your part.
