The golden nugget pleco (Baryancistrus xanthellus) is one of the more recognizable plecos in the hobby, thanks to the bright yellow spots covering its dark body and the pale yellow trim along its dorsal and caudal fins. That fin banding is most vivid in juveniles and tends to shrink to small tip markings as the fish matures. Native to the fast-moving, oxygen-rich waters of Brazil's Xingu River system, particularly the Volta Grande region above Belo Monte falls and the rio Iriri, this species lives among and beneath submerged boulders, clinging to the substrate in habitats that churn with current. In the wild it feeds primarily on algae, supplemented occasionally by bryozoans and insect larvae, making it an omnivore in the broadest sense. Juveniles tend to congregate loosely under flat rocks and are reasonably tolerant of one another, but adults are a different story entirely. Males especially become fiercely territorial as they age and will challenge conspecifics and similarly shaped tankmates without hesitation. Keeping this species with medium to large characids that occupy the upper water column tends to work well, since they simply don't compete for the same space. If you want to house multiple bottom-dwellers together, a large tank with plenty of visual barriers and thoughtfully arranged rockwork is non-negotiable. Breeding is possible but demanding, and it's a project best approached with experience.
