The Three-ray Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus triradiatus) hails from the Orinoco River system and surrounding basins in Venezuela, including the Valencia Lake basin and the southern tributaries of Lake Maracaibo. Like other members of the genus, males develop the characteristic bushy facial tentacles that make Ancistrus so recognizable, and there's an interesting theory that these growths may actually mimic juvenile fish, serving as lures to attract spawning females. One biologically unusual trait worth knowing: this species is capable of breathing air directly, which reflects its adaptation to the oxygen-variable environments of its native range. In the aquarium it spends most of its time grazing surfaces and tucking itself into hiding spots. Despite being listed as aggressive in some records, it reads more as territorial, particularly among males competing for caves and spawning sites. Kept with peaceful tankmates like characins, Corydoras, or other small South American catfish, it fits into a community without much drama. Breeding is a genuine highlight of keeping this species. Males take sole charge of egg guarding and fan the clutch diligently until the fry are free-swimming. One practical note: handle and net these fish carefully, as both the cheek spines and pectoral fins can snag in mesh and injure the fish.
