Found on the rocky floor of Lake Tanganyika, Lamprologus lemairii is one of the most specialized predators in the entire cichlid family. Its mottled, irregular color pattern is not merely decorative. It works hand in hand with a remarkable behavioral trick. This fish will lie completely still on the substrate, blending in with the rubble and detritus around it, looking for all the world like a dead fish. When a curious smaller fish moves in to investigate, it gets swallowed. This technique, co-opting a defensive behavior called thanatosis for purely offensive ends, makes L. lemairii genuinely unusual even among dedicated piscivores. In the lake it lives a largely solitary existence, haunting rocky structure without roaming far. In an aquarium it is similarly sedentary and should be kept alone or only alongside fish large enough that the thought of eating them simply does not arise. Big Rift Lake species like Frontosa or Benthochromis are the standard recommendation. Its diet is exclusively live fish in the wild, which makes feeding a practical challenge in captivity, and it has never been bred in a home aquarium. Despite the beginner care rating, this is really a fish for the dedicated cichlid enthusiast who knows exactly what they are taking on.
