Pore Coral (Montipora crypta) is one of those Montipora species that separates casual reef keepers from the dedicated ones. Native to the Red Sea and found across broader Indo-Pacific reef systems, it typically grows in thin, overlapping plates or sheets, with a finely textured surface covered in the small pores and tubercles characteristic of the genus. The coloration tends toward earthy browns and greens under natural conditions, though intense reef lighting can bring out hints of purple or orange in the tissue. In the wild, it occupies well-lit, high-flow zones on the reef where water movement is consistent and nutrient levels stay low. That gives you a clear signal about what it needs in captivity: this is not a coral that tolerates neglect or unstable conditions. Flow needs to be vigorous enough to keep detritus from settling on the plates, which can cause rapid tissue recession. Lighting demands sit at the higher end, so placement toward the top of the tank is usually the right call. Montipora in general can be sensitive to swings in alkalinity and calcium, and crypta appears to follow that pattern closely. This one is best suited to an established, well-dialed system in the hands of an experienced reefer.
