The Tengra Mystus (Mystus tengara) is a slender, whiskered catfish native to the river systems and ponds of South Asia, with a range stretching from Pakistan and India through Nepal and Bangladesh, and reports of it reaching as far as Afghanistan. In the wild it occupies a broad range of habitats, from gently flowing rivers to still ponds across lowland plains and foothills, which hints at its adaptability. Like others in its genus it has the ability to breathe air as a supplement to gill respiration, a trait that likely helps it cope with warm, low-oxygen environments during dry seasons. It is a carnivore, and keepers should expect it to take meaty foods readily. Reaching anywhere between three and seven inches depending on conditions, it needs a tank with enough room to move around comfortably and appreciates some cover in the form of caves or driftwood. Temperament is generally manageable, though its predatory nature means very small tankmates are at risk. Breeding in captivity appears to follow the egg-scattering pattern typical of the family, with pair bonding likely playing some role. This is an intermediate-level fish, more a rewarding project for someone with a bit of catfish experience than a beginner pickup.
