The Chandkas Barb (Osteochilus nashii) is one of those species you're more likely to stumble across by accident than find on a deliberately stocked shelf. Most specimens that appear in the trade arrive as stowaways mixed into shipments of other Indian fish. It belongs to a genus of 34 described species, none of which have really broken into mainstream hobby popularity, but that rarity is part of the appeal for collectors who enjoy something off the beaten path. In the wild, this fish occupies fast-moving hill streams and rivers in India, and it grows to a respectable size that demands real tank space. Behaviorally, it's peaceful enough for community setups but sturdy enough to handle livelier tankmates. A combination that gives you decent flexibility. That said, it's a shoaling species with a genuine social hierarchy, so keeping a group of five or more isn't just nice to have, it's genuinely important. Smaller groups tend to concentrate stress on the lowest-ranking fish, and lone individuals can turn snappy toward anything that resembles them. Good companions include other Indian hill stream residents from genera like Barilius, Devario, Garra, and Botia. Though those species don't all get along with each other, so some homework before stocking is worthwhile. Captive breeding hasn't been documented.
