Pookode Lake Barb
Pethia pookodensis
A rare gem from a single Indian lake, perfect for peaceful community tanks.

About
The Pookode Lake Barb (Pethia pookodensis) is a small, seldom-seen cyprinid native to Pookode Lake in Kerala, India. A very restricted natural range that makes it genuinely uncommon in the hobby outside its home country, though commercial breeding efforts are gradually changing that. Like other members of the Pethia genus, it carries a characteristic stiff, serrated last dorsal-fin ray and two dark blotches along the body, one on the flank and one on the caudal peduncle, which help distinguish it from close relatives like P. ticto and P. punctatus. It's a compact fish, topping out well under two inches, which makes it a natural fit for smaller community setups. Temperamentally it's about as agreeable as barbs get. Peaceful, undemanding on water chemistry, and compatible with a wide range of tankmates including small tetras, livebearers, rasboras, loaches, and catfish. Being a true schooling species, a group of at least six to ten individuals is the way to go. Kept in numbers, these fish settle in, become noticeably bolder, and males will develop their best coloration when they have rivals to display against. Breeding in captivity hasn't been documented yet, which adds some mystique to an already interesting little fish.
