The Indigo Barb (Pethia setnai) is a small, peaceful cyprinid native to clear-water streams in Goa, on India's western coast. It carries the typical Pethia body plan. A compact, laterally compressed form with three dark vertical markings along the flanks, though the central marking, positioned beneath the dorsal fin, is notably pale and diffuse, which actually sets it apart from similar-looking relatives in the genus. The dorsal fin also features a stiff, serrated last spine, a defining characteristic across all Pethia species. In the aquarium, this is a genuinely easy fish to keep and a solid choice for beginners. It asks very little in terms of water chemistry and blends naturally into community setups alongside other small cyprinids, tetras, livebearers, loaches, and catfish. Like most schooling barbs, it really does need company. A group of eight to ten individuals is the sweet spot. Kept in good numbers, the fish settle in, behave more naturally, and the males brighten up noticeably as they posture and compete for female attention. Breeding is straightforward in principle, egg-scattering with no parental care, though separating the adults from the eggs promptly is essential if you want to raise any fry. In a well-maintained, planted tank, occasional spawning can happen on its own.
