About

The Shalyni Barb (Pethia shalynius) is a compact, peaceful little cyprinid from the hill streams of Assam and Meghalaya in northeastern India. It carries a distinguishing blue longitudinal stripe along the body, and two dark markings on the caudal peduncle give it a neat, finished look at the tail end. Barbels are absent, and the lateral line is incomplete, wrapping up before the midpoint of the body. Details that help separate it from similar-looking Pethia relatives. Being a hill stream fish, it prefers cooler water than most community barbs, and that preference is the main thing to think through before adding it to a tank. It can work beautifully alongside other cool-water species from comparable habitats, open-water cyprinids of similar size, or bottom dwellers like loaches and Garra species, but it tends to clash in needs with the typical tropical community setup. Like most schooling barbs, it genuinely benefits from being kept in groups of at least six to ten individuals. A larger group reduces skittishness, produces a more natural-looking display, and encourages males to show their best coloration as they react to rivals. The species is rarely seen in the hobby outside India, though commercial breeding efforts are apparently underway. Breeding in captivity has not been documented to date.
